The original text was part of 1 of the 2002 UdelaR's school program 2 bachelor thesis.

The academic research was tutored by PhD arch. Laura Alemán.

Ernesto Leborgne Fossemale (1906-1986) was an extraordinary modern architect in many senses.

One of the uncommon facts about EL, is that he signed only 4 buildings in his whole career, since he worked for about 35 years in a construction company without working up authorial projects.

Another particularity is that he was strongly connected to the Joaquin Torres Garcia constructivism thinking.

Each of the last 3 houses he built —two of them for artists of the Taller TG and one for his family— are incredible rich essays about materiality, geometry, austerity, recontextualization of recycled materials, time, frontality, constructivism, nature, sculptures (art works) and symbols, that gave him national attention, and fostered fascination of a small number of architects and students that somehow identify themselves with an aura of mystery and spare atmospheres he worked up.

As he left almost no texts about his architectural approach, this research focused in visiting these extraordinary works, 'reading' and de-coding from first hand.

In specific, the house built (a renovation and extension project) for Elsa Andrada and Augusto Torres, in my opinion, deserves international recognition, since many of the JTG's principles are powerfully represented and breathe the humblest home air of 'Carrasco' neighborhood.

Understanding such an isolated architect in terms of the way he conceived architecture, generally demands intelligibility throughout the measuring references of another famous architect's works. May the Tlalpan Chapel extension, or the Casa de Luis Ramiro Barragán Morfín be adequate, sharing a:

. low profile preference for the facade design,

. garden: alive, lush, expansive more than designed,

. orthogonality and height difference of simple rectangular rooms,

. light from the sky and the garden of clouds,

. fountains, water,

. limited material textures,

. straightforward construction system, economic for the region,

. small level variations as part of the journey,

. each work is the result of a small variation within the same big theme and constraints.

And more.
