Groundscape for Landscape.

Murmansk, Russia.

The subject of this young architects’ international competition was a 23-hectare vacant area. With valuable natural assets, the organizers and residents (through surveys briefed) did not encourage designers to build: they wanted to preserve a raw –wild– park essence.

Considering that it became surrounded by city’s recent expansions, Groundscape’ proposal challenge the Brief by building and defining future growth but doing it with 3 semi/underground strategies. The proposal hides parking, retail, educational, cultural galleries and undefined spaces and, at the same time, ski slopes, water mirrors and urban fireplaces inside domes (in one of the coldest cities on Earth) were the Park’s ground-level elements offered

Domes' design respond to both providing a self-supporting rational construction archetype and was buried in a way that at underground level they offer more floor area than the area taken at ground level.

The initial natural status was thus maintained and somehow increased with this telluric and elemental (fire, water, terrain slopes) additions that will host and foster several uses by the local communities.

More about Groundscape

The Groundscape operations were designed as a system, considering the possibilities of ruther expansions withing the same logic and without harming the groundfloor wild experience.

The first stage indoor areas totalize 15.000 m2, expandable up to a total of 25.000 m2.

A city electric infrastructure pass through the site, setting important setbacks. Thus, one of the main design decisions was the creation of a Northern slim Slope, acting a a threshold and maximizing the vastness sensations by colonizing the very Northern edge

This project was awarded with a 3rd prize in the young category (recent graduates and studentes).
